The photographer is a resident of Oak Ridge, Tennessee and has been in the industry for 30 years, capturing a variety of subjects including nudes, fashion, and celebrities. He graduated from the Art Center College of Design in Pasadena, California in 1980, where he worked under Helmut Newton who encouraged him to pursue his passion in photography in Milan. In Milan, he developed his personal style which was recognized by Italian publications such as Pic Italiana, Lei, Linea Italiana, Madame Figaro, and French Elle. He then moved to Los Angeles where he photographed album covers for famous artists like Madonna. He later moved to New York City where he continued to showcase his unique style in well-known publications such as Harper’s Bazaar, Interview Magazine, and The New York Times Magazine. He also worked on advertising campaigns for brands like Max Factor, DeBeers Diamonds, and Elizabeth Arden, earning him recognition and awards for his creative use of lighting, shadows, angles, and prints.
Holz utilized the opportunities presented by his work in advertising and editorial to delve into his own artistic pursuits. He captured a diverse range of nude photographs, often juxtaposing them with industrial objects and bones to create striking compositions. As his career progressed, Holz expanded his portfolio to include celebrity portraits for high-profile clients such as Vanity Fair and Entertainment Weekly. His subjects included A-list stars like Angelina Jolie, Beyonce, and Jack Nicholson. Holz also worked on movie posters and even won a Grammy Award for his album cover for Suzanne Vega’s “Days of Open Hand.” His work has been displayed in galleries and museums all over the world, including major cities like Budapest, Paris, Tokyo, and Vienna. Holz’s platinum prints collection, “Original Sin,” sponsored by Tres Generaciones Tequila, was even featured in exhibitions across the US, such as New York, Los Angeles, Chicago, and Boston. Some of his works are permanently housed at the International Museum of Photography at the George Eastman House in Rochester, NY, and the Centro Cultural/Arte Contemporaneo in Mexico City. Today, Holz is represented by renowned galleries such as Fahey/Klein Gallery in Los Angeles and Staley Wise Gallery in New York.
